The Recall Madness Continues as Fisher Price Recalls Millions of Products

Sometimes I wonder what the world was like before we were inundated with endless safety and hazard recalls. On one hand, they are obviously important, saving us and our families from danger, potential poisoning and accident, but on the other hand the world was obviously a smaller place before.

Even just fifty years ago many got their milk and eggs from local farmers, rather from mass distribution. Food was less processed, more natural, meaning the shelf life was shorter, but it got eaten more quickly or it was thrown away. Toys were still manufactured in bulk quantities by large corporations, but not to the capacity they are today.

As Fisher Price, one of the most notable names in the toy industry, joins the recent surge in product recalls, I start to think maybe our kids would be better off playing with nothing but sock puppets and corn dollies.

The massive scale of the Fisher Price Recall is astounding. Issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in conjunction with Fisher Price on Thursday, September 30, the recall includes seven million Fisher Price trikes after more than ten injuries were report.

Models for the recalled trikes include Hot Wheels Trike (model # 72633), Lil’ Kawasaki Trike (model # 72642), Kawasaki Trike (model # 72792), and Kawasaki Tough Trike (model #B8775 and #N6021), Boys Tough Trike (model # 72643) and Girls Tough Trike (model # 72644), Barbie Free Spirit Trike (model # 72639), Barbie Tough Trike (model #B8776), and Barbie Tough Trike Princess Ride-On (model # M5727), Dora the Explorer Tough Trike (model # K6672), Diego Tough Trike (model # K6673 and #V4270) and the Thomas Tough Trike (model # T6209).

The trike recall is due to a plastic ignition key that sticks out from the seat. Children can sit or fall on this key and incur injuries that include genital bleeding.

Along with the Trike model recalls, Fisher Price also recalled their Baby Playzone Crawl & Cruise Playground toys, Crawl & Slide Arcade, Baby Gymtastics Play Wall, Ocean Wonders Kick & Crawl Aquarium, 1-2-3 Tetherball and Bat & Score Goal and Little People Wheelies Stand ‘n Play Rampway toys.

On top of the millions of toys recalled by the company, they are also recalling over one million Healthy Care, Easy Clean and Close to Me High Chairs.

For more information about reported injuries and specific model numbers, as well as how you can report injuries, visit the official Mattel website, or the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The entire thing is mind-boggling, and as I said, it almost makes me long for simpler times, when injuries happened and just cared for them, rather than recalling everything under the sun.
