Wednesday Giveaway: $20 Amazon Gift Card

It’s Wednesday again, which as our regular readers know, means it’s time for our weekly giveaway! Yup, on top of our daily updates — covering everything from bizarre income strategies and how to save on travel to bad credit scores and parking tickets — we also like to reward our readers, once a week, with something tangible, that they can use. Last week that meant an iTunes gift card, and for this week that means an Amazon gift card.

That’s right, this week we’re giving one lucky reader a $20 Amazon gift card, good for anything within the Amazon store — which is quite a bit these days. All you have to do is let us know your best tips on finding employment. (It’s a tough world out there, we need all the help we can get.) We’ll also highlight some of our favorite comments, along with the winning comment, when the winner is announced. So.

Here’s how to enter:

  • Leave a comment letting us know your best tips on finding employment.

My first step is to always look at government web sites to find jobs for which I qualify - they are usually much more clear on what they're looking for; there aren't as many irrelevant jobs to sift through; you know you're not going to be scammed into applying for a job that doesn't exist or is for some shady, fly-by-night operation; and government jobs pay better, have better benefits and are generally more stable.

Look closely at the job listings you are applying for and use the same language they used when writing a cover letter or re-wording your resume. Your application will usually go through an HR department before it actually gets to whoever is actually in charge of hiring. They will look for keywords in order to narrow down the pool of applicants.

I actually got a job after getting laid off within a week..making more than I did at my old one, I got very lucky. I actually found mine in the good old newspaper! A lot of small businesses find it cheaper than posting an ad online, so try it out!

Right now, and perhaps it's always been this way, but it's all about who you know. If you know someone that knows someone who has a job opening in their company, that's usually a better way to get your foot in the door than just submitting your resume. Put your nets out in your social group and see if any of them come up with something.

Have a resume made for each type of job you are interested in then do research online. That way your resumes are made and each one is conformed to a job type you are searching. Go to job fairs and hand them out you may get a call.

Besides casting a wide net, using both online methods (craigslist, monster, careerbuilder, etc.) and pounding the pavement, I'd say the best way to find employment is to think outside the box and try for things you might not initially think you're qualified for or interested in -- sometimes the best opportunities arise when you take that chance!

    1. Do volunteer work in the field you are trying to find a job in. You can use them for references and it will show that you're skilled and reliable. 2. Network. Tell everyone you know that you're looking for a job. Sooner or later, somebody will think of you when a job comes up or somebody will have just heard about an opening and will tell you

Just send out your resume to places you would like to work, regardless if there are positions or not! Also, put the word out that you're looking. Oftentimes employers put out internal notices first, your friends can notify you of the internal posts before the public knows.

Best employment finding tips: First, try for referrals/introductions through family and friends, even former business associates. This gives you a bit of an edge...depending on how high up the referral is. Barring that, and in addition to, show up at the interview 10 minutes early. This shows you are prompt, and it gives you a chance to calm and relax. It also gives you a chance to talk to the secretary/receptionist. Be friendly, and try to get as much info on the company/interviewer/job specifics (what exactly are they looking for) as you can from her. Also, make a good impression here. You would be surprised how much influence a secretary/receptionst will have with the interviewer! And even if it is negligible, her simple introduction of you to the interviewer is at the very least a 'subliminal' influence. The more positive her tone/voice in introducing/announcing you, the more receptive the interviewer will be towards you, initially. Then you can build from there. Then relax and enjoy the interview:Be yourself. I am a facebook fan of Wallet genius (as Terry McPherson)
