Whenever I feel that there is something that I just "must have", I write it down on my shopping list. I tell myself that if Saturday rolls around and I still want the item, then I can buy it. But about 99.999% of the time, not only do I NOT end up buying the item, I can't imagine why I wanted it in the first place!

I buy most of my clothes in consignment stores- it's amazing the stuff I've found for dirt cheap, including designer items with the tags still on. Just yesterday I was shopping on Amazon for a new bag and found an $800 designer bag marked down to $240, and it's *gorgeous*!

I have $75 deducted from each paycheck and put into a savings account. I also take any money I save by clipping coupons or rebates and add it to the savings account....it really helps at Christmas that there's always money saved to spend on presents and we don't have to scramble to buy gifts.

The smartest way I've ever saved money was to save all my receipts. That way, if something gets marked down, clearanced or goes on sale within three months of my buying it, I can buy it again at the cheaper price and return it at the higher price. In one case, I got $70 back on a desk and another time I saved at least $50 on an electronic toy.

Being smart has helped me save A LOT. When I know what I want to buy, I watch the sales for a few weeks to see who has the lowest prices on it and then I go and get it. And I keep track in my head of which grocery stores have the cheapest prices on what so that if I can't wait for a sale, I know where I can pay the least.

I try to be a smart and strategic shopper when I go to thrift stores and second-hand shops -- I'll take my smart phone with me and look up items that I can possibly re-sell at a profit, and I've made a pretty penny doing so, especially on items like old first-edition books and albums.
