Good Lord! Apparently buying an iPhone or a BlackBerry may make you a supporter of war. At least, according to the Enough Project, who are targeting such companies as Apple and Research in Motion with their new Raise Hope for Congo campaign.

Yes, apparently iPhones, BlackBerrys, PCs, laptops, and just about every other device on the market today contain what is known as conflict minerals. That is, materials such as tantalum and tin that are mined in the Congo, where one of the most brutal wars in the world has been raging for what seems like forever. Therefore, if you waited in line to buy a defective iPhone 4, that makes you a warmonger. Way to go, punk!

When asked about conflict minerals and Apple’s use of them in their products, Steve Jobs responded by saying the following:

“We require all of our suppliers to certify in writing that they use conflict few materials. But honestly there is no way for them to be sure. Until someone invents a way to chemically trace minerals from the source mine, it’s a very difficult problem.”

That’s not a good enough answer for the sweatshop wearing, leather purse touting activists though, and they’re trying to get you to buy conflict mineral free products such as…oh wait, they don’t tell you. Instead they expect you to email 21 of the biggest electronics makers, saying that you want “the rape and violence that is being driven by the illicit trade of conflict material in the Congo to stop.” Come on guys, I’m all for change and stuff, but if you want me to give up my iPhone at least tell me what I can buy in exchange for it.

Activist fail.
